Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
There are days when even the quiet moments feel full. A task waits. A conversation stays with us. We sit down, yet something within us keeps reaching for the next thing that needs to be done.
In Matthew 11:28–30, Jesus offers an invitation to people who labour and carry heavy burdens. He calls them to come to Him, and then to learn from Him.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Notice that Jesus does more than offer a moment away from our responsibilities. He invites us into a relationship: come to Me, take My yoke, learn of Me.
A yoke belongs to the work of walking and carrying. Jesus uses that image to speak of following Him. His invitation includes rest, but it also includes a new way of living under His care and instruction.
And then He tells us something about His heart. He is meek and lowly. The One who calls the weary does not approach them with contempt. We can come to Him honestly, before our words are tidy and before every problem has been resolved.
Perhaps the burden you carry today includes something that must still be done. A person needs your care. A decision needs attention. Coming to Christ does not require you to pretend those responsibilities have disappeared.
It gives you somewhere to bring them.
You can pause before the next task and speak to Him plainly. Ask for wisdom about what belongs to today. Ask for help with what you cannot carry alone. Receive His teaching, and take the next faithful step in His company.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the welcome You have given us through Your Son. Thank You that Jesus calls the weary to come near and learn from Him.
You know the responsibilities before us and the burdens we have kept within. Help us bring them to You with honesty. Give us wisdom to recognise what needs our attention, humility to receive help, and courage to release what we cannot control.
Teach us the gentleness of Christ. As we care for others, keep us from treating ourselves or them with harshness. Let Your Word guide our choices, and help us make room to listen before we hurry on.
May the rest Jesus promises reach the places within us that have grown tired. Lead us through this day with trust in Your faithful care.
